As flood situation remained critical in several parts of the state Wednesday,evacuation process has started in Lakhimpur Kheri district,where almost 500 families have been reportedly displaced.

Two helicopters were brought in from the Bareilly Air Force unit for evacuating stranded people, said Surendra Vikram Singh,Chief Development Officer (CDO),Lakhimpur Kheri. A team of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel was called in to help with the relief operations in the remaining seven to eight villages,where around 75 boats were being used for rescuing almost 500 families,said Singh.

The CDO said that for the past two days,more than 10 lakh cusecs of water have been released from the Banbasa barrage in Uttarakhand,leading to the water flow in both Ghaghra and Sharda rivers,resulting in the heavy flood in Lakhimpur.

Officials at the Central Flood Control Centre maintained that even though the water level in all the major rivers,including Ganga,Yamuna,Ghaghra and Sharda,has gone down,after the rain stopped in the mountains Wednesday,heavy rainfall in the eastern region of the state might bring flood in several districts.

Meanwhile,evacuation process in the worst-affected Saharanpur and nearby districts has been completed. Flood relief work like distribution of medicine and the drawing out of of water from the houses is going on in Saharanpur even as people return to their homes,said Saharanpur CDO Shafakat Kamal.

Earlier,Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav reviewed the flood situation in the state and asked the officials to remain cautious and pay attention on the water level of the rivers and security of the dams,especially in Lakhimpur,Pilibhit,Bijnor,Saharanpur,Muzzafarnagar and Shamli districts.
