Social Activist Anna Hazare and his team members will soon write letters to Chief Ministers of all states to conduct a performance audit of their MLAs. He will also appeal to make these audit reports public so that voters are able select better representatives from their constituencies in the next elections.
India Against Corruption (IAC) core committee member Sanjay Singh said on Wednesday that Anna had recently written the Prime Minister to conduct a performance audit of Lok Sabha members. (As per) The information we have collected so far, only 179 MPs of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha attended Parliament proceedings during the term of 2004-09. This figure reflects non-seriousness of other members towards public welfare, Singh said. Singh was in Lucknow to announce the decisions the IAC core committee took at a meeting in Ralegan Siddhi in Maharashtra recently. The committee has resolved that there should be a performance audit of every MP and MLA. It will force them to work honestly for the public. People will also have an option to reject a MP or MLA if he fails to perform, Singh said.
In a bid to mount pressure on the MPs and MLAs to support the Jan Lokpal Bill, members of Team Anna will start a campaign in Uttar Pradesh from October 2.
Team members and IAC activists will first hold a referendum on the Jan Lokpal Bill in the constituencies of Standing Committee members and other important political parties in Amethi,Rae Bareli,Varanasi,Lucknow,Gorakhpur,Mainpuri and Ambedkar Nagar. We will ask people whether they will vote for these leaders if they do not support the Jan Lokpal Bill in Parliament, Singh said.
Local MPs,MLAs,and the Standing Committee of Parliament would be informed about public views.
Singh said IAC activists will also visit government offices and appeal to the employees to make a commitment that they will not take bribe in future. IAC will make similar appeal to traders to not give bribe to any person. IAC has drafted a Sankalp Patra to take the written commitment of the people.
After October 5,other core team members, including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, will visit five universities in UP where students had supported an anti-grant campaign when Anna was on indefinite fast in August.
UP yatras have no meaning without Lokpal Bill: Bedi
With certain political parties launching yatras ahead of the UP Assembly polls, team Anna member Kiran Bedi has said such yatras have no meaning without the passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill. Yatras being taken out by political parties in UP are an opportunity for them to express their seriousness towards Jan Lokpal Bill. Its a good opportunity for people demanding the bill to test intention of the political parties and seek a reply, Bedi told PTI over phone. If political parties want to really prove their commitment, they should call a special session of Parliament and get the bill passed, she said. Credit will go to all political parties. Without passage of the bill there will be no meaning of yatras, she said.
With elections nearing, certain parties have either launched or are in process of taking out yatras in the state. The main opposition party SP has already launched Kranti Rath Yatra while the BJP has planned Jan Swabhiman Yatra from October 13.
