Probe ordered into removal of red beacon from Jaya Prada’s vehicle

Additional district magistrate and an additional superintendent of police to jointly conduct the inquiry.

The district administration on Monday instituted a probe on the removal of the red beacon from the vehicle of Rampur MP Jaya Prada. The Additional District Magistrate and an Additional Superintendent of Police will jointly conduct the inquiry.

“We have ordered a probe into the episode. The ADM and ASP will jointly conduct the inquiry,” Umesh Kumar Singh,SP of Rampur, said.

On Saturday,Rampur Assistant Regional Transport Officer Kaushlendra Yadav removed the red beacon from Jaya Prada’s vehicle. The action was taken at the MP’s residence on Rahe Raza road in Civil Lines area of Rampur. Yadav also slapped a penalty of Rs 16,000 on Jaya Prada, giving her one month time to deposit the amount. Jaya Prada had termed the action vindictive and gave a written complain to SP Umesh Kumar Singh for lodging a case against the ARTO and the policemen who accompanied him.

Interestingly,Jaya Prada got support from Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Agarwal, who condemned the ARTO’s action. Transport Minister Durga Prasad Yadav, however, maintained that his officials had apprised him that Jaya Prada was illegally using a red beacon with flasher but he will inquire into the matter.

“We cannot take decision straightaway and blame the ARTO. If some charges are levelled against him,it should be first established,” Durga Prasad Yadav stated.

Naresh Agrwal demanded action against the ARTO,saying,“Every MP in UP is entitled to use a red beacon on the roof of his vehicle. Even I use it and remove it when I enter Delhi,” Agarwal said. “The ARTO’s action was totally uncalled for,The ARTO is not aware of the rules of his department.”

Transport officials at Lucknow also said that MPs have the privilege to use a red beacon atop their vehicles. They were given this privilege by a government order dated July 22,2010. However, the red beacon should be without a flasher. The fine for misuse of red and blue beacons is Rs 5,000,officials said.

ARTO Kaushlendra Yadav said,“The red beacon in Jaya Prada’s case was with a flasher. It has been seized by me and anyone can check it. I penalised her for Rs 16,000 as she could not produce any papers of her vehicle.”

Kaushlendra said the penalty will increase to Rs 25,000 if the MP does not deposit it within one month. “Then I will realise it by the confiscating her property,” he said.

On the controversy,Kaushlendra said he understands the challenges. “Come what may,I will not budge. I had informed my senior officials and Rampur District Magistrate about the incident,” he said.

Kaushlendra has also requested the DM to sanction a gunner for his security.
