Pollution body orders two units shut down

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has ordered the closure of two paper industries in Moradabad,Uttar Pradesh and Kashipur,Uttrakhand on Friday for violation of environmental norms.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has ordered the closure of two paper industries in Moradabad,Uttar Pradesh and Kashipur,Uttrakhand on Friday for violation of environmental norms.

During an inspection,the Board found that the industries had violated the norms by discharging colour-based effluent in the rivers without treating them properly.

In Uttar Pradesh,immediate closure notice was issued to Genus paper Product Limited in Moradabad. Its discharge was being dumped in river Ramganga,which further merges with Ganga.

Shri Shyam Pulp and Board Limited in Kashipur was given the same order,as the effluent from the industry was being dumped in river Dhela. The river further connects to river Ramganga.

“The industries were found to be dumping their effluent in the river without treating it properly. We have ordered their immediate closure now,” said a senior CPCB official. The industries have been closed by CPCB under Section 5 of Environment Protection Act. “As per the Act,we have the power to order immediate closure of an industry if it’s found to be violating the norms,” added the official.
