The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has invited bids for the removal of hazardous wastes dumped illegally at Kanpur Dehat.
We have invited bids from companies based on the Public Private Partnership model for Khanpur village, said C S Bhatt,Member Secretary of UPPCB. Once the tenders are finalised, the project cost will be assessed. As part of the rehabilitation plan, remediation of groundwater is being proposed after the removal of the waste, said Bhatt.
The 2 sq km-site in question at Khanpur village is a privately-owned area. Approximately 45,000 tonnes of Basic Chrome Sulphate, waste generated from tanneries, lie in the open there. Bids will soon be invited for the three sites in Kanpur,he added.
The move comes after the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR)-Lucknow submitted an assessment report of 11 sites last month, where hazardous waste was being dumped.
Of these 11 sites, while one is in Kanpur Dehat (Khanpur village),three others Nauraiya Khera,Juhi Baburiya-Rakhi Mandi,Panki Industrial area are in Kanpur. One site is in Ghaziabad,at Bhowapur-Kaushambi. Mat-hura has five the companies involved being M/s Brij Chemical,M/s Dinesh Chemical,M/s RK Industry,M/s KM Chemical and M/s KB Industries. One site belongs to India Pesticide Limited at Lucknows Deva Road.
But out the 11 sites,7 were later removed from the list.
In Mathura,no waste was found and the units were found permanently closed, the IITR report said. At the India Pesticide Limited (Lucknow) dump, the waste was being properly processed. In Ghaziabad, mainly municipal waste was found, which has been removed.
As for the rest,at Nauraiya Khera, approximately 15,000 tonnes of waste comprising heavy metals have been dumped over a 6,000 sq feet area. According to the IIT-R report,as houses have been built at the site, the waste cannot be lifted.
At Juhi Baburiya, around 6 acres is densely populated with illegal settlements. Around 10,000 tonnes of waste there is mixed with the fly ash, making it difficult to remove it.
In Panki Industrial area, most of the land belongs to the Railways where some temporary houses have been constructed. Around 35,000 tonnes of waste dumped at the site is mixed with soil and other non-hazardous waste.
