To spread awareness about the industrial waste that could be reused to make new products, the UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has prepared a directory of waste materials lying with the industrial units across the state.
As per UPPCB records, around 900 industrial units across the state generate about 8 lakh tonnes of waste every day. About 31,276 tonnes of it could be available for the recycling and reuse.
In the directory, titled Wealth Out Of Waste, the UPPCB has categorised waste materials into acids, alkalis, solvents, oils and waxes, plastics, textiles and leather, metals, metal sludge etc. It has provided the name and address of every industrial unit, its product, waste materials it generates, its quantity and the purpose for which it could be reused or recycled. The various methods of recycling have also been elaborated upon.
The objective is to promote recycling of industrial wastes that go unused and industries have to store or dump that, said Sunil Kumar Singh,Chief Environmental Engineer,UPPCB. As per UPPCB records, metal sludge industries generate maximum 1,400 tonne of waste every day, followed by about 700 tonne by oil and wax industry and 300 tonne by other metal industries in UP. The Board officials said plastic waste can be used for manufacturing of electric pipes while polythene bags could be used in road making and cement plants.
Likewise, leather cuttings can be used for poultry feed and organic fertiliser, fleshing could be used in glue industry. Cotton yarn generated from textile units can be used for making cushion items. Alkalis like lime generated from tanneries can be recycled. Waste oils can be used as fuel in furnaces while oil spent can be used in soap industry, said Singh.
Non-ferrous items like metal scrap and turnings can be reused to make plumbing items like taps and cocks. Fly ash, lead ash and incinerator ash can be used in cement industry, road embankment construction and brick making. Hair shavings can be recycled as well, Singh said. Press mud generated from sugar industries can be used as bio-compost.
