‘Papa! It’s more than I ever imagined’: Aditya’s first call
Aditya who has consistently excelled academically, secured the top position in both Class 10 and 12 examinations, with 97.8% and 97.5% marks, respectively.

Aditya Srivastava, who secured the top rank in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services 2023, has set a remarkable example for the country’s aspiring youth. The 27-year-old who cleared the exam after his third attempt, shared the news with his family on Tuesday afternoon after the results were declared.
In a call to his father, Aditya said, “Papa! It’s more than I ever imagined.”
In 2022, Aditya secured All India Rank 236 and was selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS), and is undergoing training for nearly five months in Hyderabad.
“In his first attempt, Aditya did not qualify for the interview. In the second attempt, he secured 236th rank and got selected. Despite being in training, Aditya continued his preparations diligently. We anticipated a rank between 30 and 40 due to his hard work, but the result exceeded our expectations,” said Aditya’s father, Ajay Kumar Srivastava, an assistant audit officer at the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) in Lucknow.
“We were expecting the result today. I was eagerly checking the internet for updates. In the afternoon, Aditya called from Hyderabad and shared the unexpected news. My hands were trembling,” added Ajay, who rushed home from office to be with the family.
Aditya who has consistently excelled academically, secured the top position in both Class 10 and 12 examinations, with 97.8% and 97.5% marks, respectively.
Following this, he pursued a dual degree in B.Tech and M.Tech in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur).
After completing his degree, he joined a multinational company in Bengaluru, where he worked for nearly 15 months. However, Aditya quit his job in 2020 to focus on UPSC preparations.
While Aditya could not be contacted, his mother, Abha Srivastava, a Sanskrit graduate, mentioned that her son who has always been academically inclined, also enjoys playing cricket. “Aditya, whose nickname is Chiku, has always been academically inclined. We were confident that he would achieve great heights. Today’s result is beyond our expectations. He wanted to serve his nation and especially downtrodden people and I’m thrilled that my son will serve as an inspiration for those aspiring for civil services,” she said.
Aditya never attended any particular coaching classes for preparation, but was always inspired by a relative, Vinod Kumar, a former director of civil services training institute. “Vinod Kumar, 75, regularly assisted Aditya with his preparations and monitored his studies,” said Abha.
Aditya’s younger sister, Priyanshi Srivastava, is currently pursuing graduation from Delhi University, while his grandfather, Shiv Ram, is a retired government employee.
Expressing immense joy, he said, “Aditya has fulfilled our dreams, we’re all elated.” Acknowledging his wife’s decision to not pursue a job, Ajay Srivastava said, despite being a top performer, Abha, chose to ensure that their children strive for their own accomplishments. “We hold the same expectations for our daughter to excel,” he said.
