Even as UPA-II completes its first year in office, the Bahujan Samaj Party on Saturday held demonstrations against the Centre’s alleged step-motherly and discriminatory attitude towards Uttar Pradesh.

The demonstrations were held in one constituency of each of the 55 districts in the state. The BSP would, henceforth, hold demonstrations in one Assembly seat of each of the state’s 18 divisions every Wednesday. The BSP’s demonstration in Assembly constituencies is being seen as Chief

Minister Mayawati’s political strategy to counter Congress’s Yatra programme.

In a press release, the BSP made it clear that today’s demonstrations were just the beginning of the party’s “state-wide agitation” against the Centre’s “discriminatory” attitude towards UP.

Even as Mayawati could not undertake aerial surveys to supervise the programme in various districts, she had asked senior party leaders to camp in different districts and supervise the demonstrations.

The BSP leaders highlighted the plight of youths who migrate to Congress-ruled states like Maharashtra.

“Congress party’s responsible leaders focused only on the pathetic condition of people of two constituencies — Rae Bareli and Amethi. Guests from foreign countries are invited to see the condition of such people and then external aid is sought,” the release said.

While highlighting the Centre’s “negative” attitude towards the state government’s demand of a Rs 80,000 crore special package for Bundelkhand, the BSP leaders reiterated CM Mayawati’s support for the division of UP into three states.

The leaders also emphasised on the demand for the inclusion of various castes like Kahar,Bind,Kewat,Majhi,Rajbhar and Lonia in the SC category.

The party also criticised the Centre for not paying attention to the demand for the creation of a Bench of Allahabad High Court in Agra and Meerut.

With the Model Code of Conduct in force in Domariyaganj Assembly constituency, the BSP could not hold demonstrations in 15 districts adjoining Siddarth Nagar district.
