My Name is Don

Khan’s best bid to woo viewers to watch his forthcoming release.

Often, the best performances by Shahrukh Khan are offscreen and the one he delivered at Lucknow on a cold and frosty Wednesday while promoting his forthcoming film Don2 was such an exception. Hundreds of visitors to Phoenix mall confirmed his star-power,hanging in wait on the railings for over an hour and cheering themselves hoarse as he arrived with his characteristic aplomb and did a jig with co-actor Priyanka Chopra to the tune of the movie’s songs, even enacting a scene or two from the film. The act continued through the media interaction, which he warmed up with an ‘As salamu alaykum’,nudging Chopra and the film’s director Farhan Akhtar to share their association with Lucknow.

“The first part was a tribute to the Amitabh Bachchan-starring classic, but the sequel is absolutely original and a thrilling narration of how after conquering South East Asia,Don reaches out for Europe,” said Khan, avoiding any mention of his last venture,Ra.One,which evoked a response not very heartening. “There are chilling thrills and exotic Continental locales…Don concluded open-endedly and Farhan was constantly hounded with the question whether there would be a sequel so he came up with one,” said Khan, adding that it is an exciting time for cinema, where risks are being taken and there is immense scope for characterisation.

“We have come a long way from the ‘maa, main pass ho gaya’ kind of hero. I am fortunate,I have played the entire gamut…from a blackmailer and murderer to a romantic,” he said. For Priyanka, coming to Lucknow brought back a lot of childhood memories, but she chose to give a peak into the movie and talked about her part. “Roma is now a policewoman, who wants to see Don behind the bars. There is a piquant chemistry between the two,” she revealed. Akhtar, whose repertoire comprises an equal number of acting assignments and directorial projects, said he did one thing at a time. “I am blessed with a switch which I flick on and off when I am acting and when directing. My creative urge remains satisfied suitably,to act as well as to direct,” said the director of movies like Dil Chahta Hai,and Lakshya, whose next acting job is in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, the biography of athlete Milkha Singh.
