Murder accused Sahjanwa MLA surrenders

Independent MLA Yashpal Rawat and his two associates — Nagina Yadav and Vijay Mishra — surrendered before a court on Tuesday in connection with a murder case.

Independent MLA Yashpal Rawat and his two associates — Nagina Yadav and Vijay Mishra — surrendered before a court on Tuesday in connection with a murder case. Chief Judicial Magistrate of Gorakhpur sent them in judicial custody till May 3.

Rawat, who represents Sahjanwa Assembly seat in Gorakhpur, had been evading arrest since one Vijay Rawat was shot dead on March 20.

According to Om Prakash and Kaz Mohammad alias Kaju, who claimed to be accompanying Vijay on that fateful day,the MLA and his two aides, along with an unidentified person, had shot Vijay dead at a brick kiln at Bheetirawat village.

The witnesses also recorded their statements alleging the MLA’s role in the murder before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Gorakhpur Ratnesh Srivastava on March 27.

Gorakhpur DIG Aseem Arun said apart from getting non-bailable warrants issued against the trio from the court, the police had also submitted an application seeking court’s order for the attaching their properties.

A police team will now visit the district jail to interrogate the trio after seeking permission from the court, the DIG said. According to Station Officer of Sahajanwa police station,Gajendra Rai,the investigations have shown that the murder was the fallout of an old enmity.

In 1991,Yashpal’s father Sharda Prasad, who was Samajwadi Party MLA,was shot dead near his house at Bheetirawat village. The police had then arrested eight persons, including Vijay and Om Prakash. However, all the accused were later acquitted due to lack of evidence, the SO said.
