Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
GEARING UP for the 2017 Assembly polls, Samajwadi Party has decided to counter BJP’s Hindutva agenda with the development plank of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.
The move has been initiated after SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav admitted before mediapersons that BJP will be SP’s rival in the Assembly polls. Realising that it will be difficult for the party to fight BJP on the Hindutva agenda, SP is now pushing the development agenda. Even in the social media, SP workers have been asked to use the hashtag, ‘Akhilesh means Development’, to shift the focus from Hindutva.

SP workers at the district level are being provided with booklets outlining the development work undertaken by the SP government, along with the alleged failures of the Modi government. While one booklet speaks about the achievements of the Akhilesh government, the other one lists the “unfulfilled poll promises” of BJP and its slogan ‘achche din’.
“The booklets are for publicising our achievements, which are often not discussed in the media. Our workers should be aware about them. They should also be aware about opponents canard. Besides office-bearers, even the public can use them,” Rajendra Choudhary, state SP spokesperson, said.
“BJP came to power on the promise of achche din but reserved achche din only for itself. This is a new type of governance, where the rich are getting richer,” he added.
“BJP has erected a tower of false promises during Lok Sabha polls. People were misled and voted for BJP, but now reality has dawned. The country is facing acute price rise, corruption and unemployment. In one-and-a-half-years, BJP has not fulfilled even one of its poll promises,” Choudhary said.
Party sources said these booklets are being sent to SP’s district level units across the state for distribution. The district unit office-bearers have been asked to read the booklets to defend the SP government before the public. Further, during monthly party meetings, these booklets will be discussed and distributed to local workers so that they can disseminate information about SP to people in their areas.
The party has listed the Metro Rail project, Lucknow-Agra Expressway, Samajwadi Pension Scheme, loan waiver for farmers, free irrigation, laptop to students, better health facilities, improved power situation, linking district headquarters through four lane as part of Akhilesh’s success story.
On the other hand, the party has claimed BJP has failed to check price rise, bring back black money, prevent unemployment and stop its leaders from making controversial statements. The booklets also include several media reports about the Centre.
The booklets also mention several development indicators, where UP has done better than other states. Moreover, it contains figures on “reduced” central assistance to various state projects.
