The tempos carrying commuters have continued to ply on bus routes in the city despite the Regional Transport Authoritys approval to a proposal to ban their movement last year. The authorities failure to stop the tempos from picking up commuters on city roads has caused a heavy financial loss to the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC).
Currently,140 city buses ply on different routes in the city. Another 300 buses are likely to join the city fleet in the current financial year. On an average,a city bus generates a revenue of Rs 1,200 per day, whereas the expenditure on each bus for a day is Rs 1,800. With the consent of senior district authorities, the proposal to oust tempos from the bus routes was approved at an RTA meeting in August 2009.
The Regional Manager of the UPSRTC,C B Singh, said: There is no doubt that the movement of tempos on bus routes has caused a heavy financial loss to the corporation. After the decision on the issue taken during the RTA meeting in August 2009,we hoped the tempos would be removed from bus routes.
