The Moradabad police in Uttar Pradesh Tuesday arrested a 24-year-old Muslim man for allegedly abducting and raping a 17-year-old Hindu girl.
Soon after the arrest of the accused, Bajrang Dal members rushed to the area police station, terming the incident a case of ‘love jihad’ and demanding strict action against the man.
The police said the girl’s mother complained Monday, stating that her daughter had been missing since May 29. They said within 12 hours of registering a First Information Report (FIR), they arrested the accused and handed over the Class 12 student to her family.
“The family members had made their own efforts to trace the girl for nearly a week before registering the complaint. Tracing the location of the last call in the girl’s mobile number, we nabbed the accused and rescued her,” Moradabad SP Akhilesh Bhadauria said.
He said the police charged the accused, who used to run a general store near the girl’s house, with rape and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
Bajrang Dal district unit chief Rohan Saxena, who led the group which thronged the police station, said, “The accused took a cue from the recently released movie Kerala Story. He first asked his younger sister to have a friendship with the girl and then abducted her. He was also putting her under pressure to marry him after embracing Islam. Such incidents have risen manifold in recent times. We request the Modi government to bring out a tough law to deal with such ‘love jihad’ cases,” said Saxena.
