PM to inaugurate more sport facilities in Varanasi

Officials said the upgraded facility, built at a cost of Rs 325.65 crore, will provide a platform for athletes from over 20 sports disciplines to showcase their talents.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Varanasi on October 20 to inaugurate phases 2 and 3 of the National Center of Excellence at the redeveloped Dr Sampurnanand Stadium.

Officials said the upgraded facility, built at a cost of Rs 325.65 crore, will provide a platform for athletes from over 20 sports disciplines to showcase their talents.

Officials said the redevelopment was carried out in three phases, with Phase 1 costing approximately Rs 109.36 crore, while phases 2 and 3 were completed for around Rs 216.29 crore, allowing international matches to be played at the new facility.

The sports complex provides a “state-of-the-art, multi-level indoor stadium for both indoor and outdoor sports along with facilities like gym, spa, yoga center, billiards room, cafeteria, and a banquet hall. It is designed to accommodate para-sports competitions, the officials added.

The multilevel sports facility provides 10 courts for badminton, table tennis, gymnastics, kabaddi, an Olympic size swimming pool, practice/warm-up pool, four courts for board games like chess, carrom, squash, billiards, aerobics, cross training, a cardio zone, a recovery zone, strength and conditioning zone. It also provides facilities for shooting, cricket practice field, volleyball, football, basketball, athletic tracks, and tennis court among others.

Officials said that apart from this, the PM would also lay the foundation stones of projects and inaugurate development projects in his constituency worth over Rs 1,000 crore on October 20.
