Expressing concerns over the rising trend of using bulldozer for demolitions, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Wednesday demanded the Central government to intervene and formulate guidelines for its use across the country.
Her remarks came a day after the Supreme Court said there would be no demolition of properties, including of those accused of a crime, until October 1 without its permission, while observing that even one instance of illegal demolition was against the “ethos of the Constitution”.
“Despite bulldozer demolition not being a symbol of the rule of law, the increasing trend of its use is a matter of concern. Moreover, when the general public does not agree with the bulldozer policy or any other matter, then the Centre should come forward and make uniform guidelines for the whole country, which is not being done,” Mayawati posted on X in Hindi.
She further pointed out the recent direction of the Supreme Court in this regard and added, “Otherwise, in the case of bulldozer action, Honorable Supreme Court would not have to intervene and fulfill the responsibility of the Central government, which was necessary in this case. The Central and the state governments must pay attention to the implementation of the Constitution and the rule of law.”
Notably, the two other Opposition parties in the state — the Samajwadi Party and Congress — have been frequently targeting UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his government for the use of bulldozers for the demolition of properties.
