A 25-year-old man was killed and his associate injured in an encounter in the Patwai area of Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district on Sunday, police said, adding that the duo were going to slaughter a cow.

The police identified the deceased as Sajid Qureshi and his associate as Babloo (30), who suffered a bullet injury on his leg and is undergoing treatment. They also said that a car, two countrymade weapons, cartridges, an electronic weighing machine and weapons used for slaughtering were recovered from the duo.

Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi said the investigation in the case was underway.

Sajid, a resident of Moradabad, had cases of theft, trespass and others booked against him. Babloo, also from Moradabad, has six criminal cases, including those related to cow slaughter and under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters’ Act, against him.

According to the police, they were on Saturday tipped that two people were coming from Moradabad to Patwai in a car for slaughtering a cow. On Sunday morning, they spotted a speeding car coming from Moradabad.

When the police asked the car to stop, its driver ran the vehicle in another direction and they chased it. The driver lost control of the speeding vehicle and it overturned in a field on the roadside, according to the police.

The police said the two people sitting in the car then came out and started firing at them. The police returned the fire and both the men were shot at. They were immediately taken to the district hospital, where Sajid succumbed to injuries.
