Lucknow: Tiger lurking, PAC platoon deployed in 11 villages for students taking Board exam
Most of the students have to cross areas, considered unsafe due to tiger sightings, to reach their examination centres

In around 11 villages in Lucknow district where a tiger has terrorised people for the past three months, the district administration has deployed Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel to ensure that students appearing for High School and Intermediate examinations can safely reach their exam centers.
There are around 300 students who are taking the state Board exams this year from Meethenagar, Rehman Khera, Karjhan, Duguli, Ulrapur and other neighbouring villages. Most of the students have to cross areas, considered unsafe due to tiger sightings, to reach their examination centres.
“A meeting between the school authorities and police from the police and forest departments was held recently to address security concerns, during which it was decided to deploy PAC personnel to instill confidence among students and their parents,” said Raj Kumar Singh, principal of an inter college where many students from the affected regions are appearing for the examination.
Since December, the state Forest Department has been making efforts to capture the “sugarcane tiger”, which has so far killed animals and has not attacked any humans. The forest team has set up a base camp at the Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture in Rehman Khera village, one of the 11 affected villages, to monitor and capture the big cat. The animal was last spotted three days ago, three km from Rehman Khera village, through a drone, Divisional Forest Officer, Lucknow, Sitanshu Pandey.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lucknow, Vishwajeet Srivastava, said one platoon PAC has been deployed to prevent people from venturing into thickets and to raise awareness. The PAC will patrol the affected areas to instill confidence among the public and alleviate fear of the tiger, he said.
The presence of the tiger was confirmed on December 12 when over 100 pugmarks were found in the village. Later, the tiger was spotted hunting a nilgai. Despite multiple traps, the tiger has remained elusive.
