Lucknow students as tech-savvy as metro counterparts: study

If you thought that Lucknow students between the age group of 12 and 18 years were less Internet savvy or gadget freaks than their counterparts in the metros,then think again.

If you thought that Lucknow students between the age group of 12 and 18 years were less Internet savvy or gadget freaks than their counterparts in the metros,then think again.

The findings of a recent survey conducted by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS),an IT solutions provider,suggest that 66 per cent of Lucknow students have Internet access at home,which is higher than the national average of 58 per cent.

The TCS had conducted this survey from June 2008 to March 2009 with a sample size of 14,000 students from 12 urban cities including Delhi,Kolkata,Mumbai,Ahmedabad,Kochi,Lucknow,Hyderabad,Pune,Trivandrum.    

Briefing the mediapersons on Monday,TCS principal consultant,Jayant Krishna said that the survey was conducted to understand the mood of the next generation students. 

“The survey has found that 71 per cent of Lucknow students spend more than 30 minutes online daily as compared to the national average of 67 per cent,” said Krishna.

According to the findings,56 per cent Lucknow students have personal computers at home — mini-metro average is 54 per cent.

As many as 44 per cent Lucknow students have a digital camera at home while the mini-metro average is 39 per cent. Around 74 per cent Lucknow students have access to mobile phones and seven per cent have gaming consoles.

Over 93 per cent of Lucknow students are aware of social networking which is as high as metro students.

When it comes to social networking sites,Orkut and Facebook are the most popular sites for Lucknow students.

Regarding the educational interest and career aspirations,the findings suggest that 64 per cent Lucknow students aspire to study abroad than the national average of 58 per cent.

Of them,60 per cent plan to work in the country after completing their studies abroad — national average 49 per cent.

Around 2/3rd of the students aspire for a career in Information Technology (IT) and they would like to work in an Indian company vis-à-vis a foreign IT multi-national company.
