Local bodies in UP to have central database

The state’s Directorate of Local Bodies is going to develop a central database to store information on due taxes of people and land records from all 628 urban local bodies.

The state’s Directorate of Local Bodies is going to develop a central database to store information on due taxes of people and land records from all 628 urban local bodies.

All urban local bodies will be able to update data regularly on the database. It will be a common pool available to local bodies and citizens.

The Directorate of the Local Bodies has approached the Computer Science Department of Indian Institute Technology,Kanpur,to help prepare the database.

“With this database, residents of local bodies will be able to check their house and water tax dues online and will not have to take rounds of government offices,” said Prof Phalguni Gupta from the Computer Science Department of IIT-Kanpur.

This,he said, will also streamline the working of the local bodies and bring transparency in their functioning.

“The local bodies will also have to provide details of land records, issuance of birth and death certificates in the central database,” said Rekha Gupta,Director of Local Bodies.

They will have to give details of their progress in development schemes like JNNURM and the slum development programme. This will also help officials in Lucknow check the progress in implementation of development schemes.

The local bodies will be interconnected and will be connected to the Local Bodies Directorate via video-conferencing too. Officials said all local bodies will have to update the central database weekly or monthly.

At present, most urban local bodies do not have their own website, where they could provide such details.
