He first met M F Husain at the Arts College,Lucknow, where the world famous artist had come for a visit.

“I was pursuing my Bachelors from Lucknow Arts College when he visited our campus in 1977 and that is when I met him for the first time,” says artist Sharad Pandey, who topped in his batch when he finished the Bachelor in Fine Arts course, about Husain, who passed away on Thursday.

“I started out as a freelance painter and between 1982 and ’86 I associated with him, assisting him on his famous murals, one of them being his canvas for the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi in which he depicted the evolution of aviation,” says Pandey, who has won State Lalit Kala Akademi awards and whose work has been displayed in various exhibitions including at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

“In M F Husain,I neither saw any inspiration nor perspiration. He worked on and on,energetically and tirelessly and without any display of artistic temperament. There was no mood that could get him into or out of the working mode,” Pandey shares his observations of Husain.

“His art left a deep impression not only on my creations but also my perspective and style of working. I am proud to have witnessed what made him tick.”
