Kameshwar Upadhyay,minister for sports and youth welfare in the Akhilesh Yadav Cabinet,died after a brief illness at Sir Gangaram Hospital in New Delhi on Monday. He was 79.
Upadhyay represented Bhatpar Rani constituency in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh. He was a four-time MLA and also a minister in the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav regime. He was one of the oldest candidates to win the last Assembly elections.
The leader won his first election as an independent in 1985 and later as Congress candidate in 1991. He also won in 2002 and thereafter as SP candidate in 2007 and 2012. He was earlier admitted in SGPGIMS at Lucknow in June but later referred to New Delhi after the treatment failed to yield results. Upadhyay was admitted there with breathing problems and asthma since September 23.
Even after assuming office as a minister in the Akhilesh cabinet,Upadhyay had announced that this would be his last innings and he would not contest elections any more. Despite his age,Upadhyay inspected several stadiums across the state and even suspended half a dozen officials for laxity.
State spokesperson,Rajendra Choudhary confirmed the news of his demise.
