Justice Syed Rafat Alam will be the new chief justice of the Allahabad High Court. The Governor will administer the oath to Justice Alam,currently Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court,on August 5.
Justice Alam will succeed Justice F I Rebello,who retired on July 30. Currently,Justice Amitava Lala is acting chief justice of the high court.
Justice Alam had spent a better part of his career as a high court judge in Allahabad. He was sworn in as the chief justice of MP High Court on December 20,2009.
Elevated as permanent judge of the Patna High Court on November 8,1994,Justice Alam was transferred to the Allahabad High Court on November 28 the same year.
Over a period,he also served at the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court from time to time. Justice Alam twice served the high court as acting chief justice.
Born in 1950,Justice Alam did his graduation from St Columbus College at Hazaribagh in Bihar in 1970. He did LL.B from Patna Law College.
He worked as standing counsel for the state of Bihar,besides being the standing counsel for the Bihar State Electricity Board,Patna University and Magadh University.
From 1983 till his elevation as a judge of the high court,Justice Alam served as a part-time lecturer in the Law Faculty of College of Commerce,Patna.
