After a delay of over 12 days, the much-awaited monsoon entered the state capital on early Monday morning with the city receiving 14.8 mm of rainfall.

The first spell of monsoon reduced the day temperature to 32.3 degree Celsius — five degrees below normal – and the minimum temperature at 26 degree Celsius fell one degree below the normal.

“Monsoon has entered eastern UP and in next three days it will cover the western part of the state too,” said Met director J P Gupta.

After the Sunday’s pre-monsoon shower, the Meteorological Office expected the monsoon to hit Lucknow on July 1. But after Monday’s rainfall, the office declared that monsoon has covered the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh.

During the past 24 hours, heavy rainfall was reported in various districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Basti,Gorakhpur,Maharajganj and Bareilly. (See Box)

At Lucknow, the shower led to water logging in various parts of city, including Rana Pratap Marg,Hussainganj,Azad Nagar and Indira Nagar. The rain, however, brought relief to farmers in the state who were waiting to sow paddy in their fields.

According to Met officials, light rain or thundershowers are likely to take place in east UP and Lucknow in the next 24 hours.
