A fighter plane prepares to touch down as Indian Air Force conducts trial on the airstrip of the under-construction Ganga Expressway in Shahjahanpur on Friday (PTI)The under-construction Ganga Expressway became the first expressway in the country to provide night-landing capabilities for fighter aircraft. The two-day trial by the Indian Air Force began on Friday on the expressway’s 3.5-km-long airstrip in Shahjahanpur district.
About 250 cameras have been installed on the airstrip, it is learnt.
The airshow saw take-off and landing trial of advanced fighter and transport aircraft, including Rafale, Jaguar and Mirage, during the day and night.
With this, the Ganga Expressway also became the became to fourth expressway in the state to have an airstrip for fighter aircraft of the Air Force.
Other expressways with day-time landing provision are in Unnao (Agra-Lucknow Expressway), Sultanpur (Purvanchal Expressway) and near Etawah (Bundelkhand Expressway).
Officials said to secure the airstrip, the IAF has taken over operational control of the stretch in co-ordination with Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority.
