Hospital owner detained after staff ‘attack’ I-T team

The owner of Jeevan Jyoti Hospital,Dr A K Bansal,was today detained by Allahabad police in connection with an alleged attack on the income tax team by the hospital staff and other unidentified persons on Tuesday.

Two FIRs were registered against Dr Bansal and 40 others late on Tuesday night. Three persons were arrested.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Allahabad) Naveen Arora,said: “Dr Bansal is being questioned in connection with the allegations made against him in the FIRs.” Another senior official said that if the police found sufficient evidence against him during initial questioning,he was likely to be arrested.

This evening,Dr Bansal held a press briefing at Hotel Regency to present his side of the story,following which he was detained. A team led by the Station Officer of Kydganj police station reached the venue and took Dr Bansal to Police Lines for questioning.

Superintendent of Police (City) Shailesh Kumar Yadav,“Two FIRs have been registered on the basis of complaints lodged by two teams of income tax officials. One was allegedly attacked in Jeevan Jyoti Hospital,while the other team was attacked when it had gone to the adjacent dental hospital and pathology centre,belonging to the same group,” said Yadav.

Along with Dr Bansal,40 others have been named in the FIRs,said Yadav. Among the three arrested are two security guards of the hospital. Dr Bansal has been accused of orchestrating the attack on the income tax team.

On Tuesday,a team of nearly 20 IT officials and personnel had gone to carry out searches at Jeevan Jyoti Hospital in connection with alleged tax evasion. They alleged that the attack was pre-planned in order to sabotage the search operation. The IT officials carried on with their task later in the day amid police presence.

In all,the IT department carried out searches at 13 places in Allahabad — all related to Dr Bansal and his wife Dr Vandana Bansal. Two premises in Delhi and Gorakhpur were also searched.

Premises sealed

The IT Department today sealed a few premises in Allahabad where searches were conducted on Tuesday. “We sealed these premises and informed the police to maintain vigil so that nobody tampers with the seals or tries to take away anything from those premises. They will be opened again in future as and when required for further investigation,” said Assistant Director (Investigations) Income Tax,Sudhanshu Dhar Mishra.
