With heavy rains forcing a near complete shut down for almost four months, the authorities concerned for projects related to sewerage treatment plants (STPs) and related works in the city are now scrambling to make up for lost time. These projects are a crucial component in the citys preparation plans for the Maha Kumbh in January 2013. At present, the city has treatment capacity for 89 million litres per day (MLD) of sewerage and before Maha Kumbh an additional 165 MLD capacity through four STPs - Kodra (25 MLD),Ponghat (10 MLD),Rajapur (60 MLD) and Numayadhai (50 MLD) - and a sewage pumping station at Mori Gate is to be completed. However, the progress of these projects has not been as per the expected speed due to various issues, including that of land acquisition. Moreover, upgradation of existing facilities at Alopi Bagh and Naini is also to be carried out.
