A COURT in Hathras on Wednesday awarded death sentence to two men in the murder case of two minor girls and injuring their parents during an attack on the family at their residence in Hathras in January. The accused have been lodged in the district jail since their arrest in January.

On Wednesday, the accused, Vikas and his friend Lalu Pal, both in their 20s, appeared before the court from jail via video-conferencing.

“The court awarded the death sentence to them both after terming the case as one of the rarest of rare,” said government counsel Dinesh Yadav. He said the court examined 12 prosecution witnesses during the trial.

Yadav added that the crime was the fallout of a property dispute.

Last Friday, the court had convicted the duo on charges of murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, and other related offences.

“We will file an appeal against the judgment,” said defence counsel Rajesh Gautam.

Vikas, a Dalit, was a distant relative of the victim Chotte Lal, a lecturer at an inter-college in Hathras. Lalu Pal, who belongs to a Backward Class community, is a friend of Vikas.

All three — Chotte Lal, Vikas, and Lalu Pal — hail from Fatehpur district.

According to the prosecution, the case dates back to the intervening night of January 22 and 23 this year, when police received information that a couple and their two minor daughters had been attacked with a sharp-edged weapon at their residence in Aashirwad Dham Colony, Hathras.

A police team reached the spot and sent the victims to a hospital, where the two girls, aged six and 12, succumbed to injuries during treatment. Chotte Lal and his wife, Virangana, suffered serious injuries and underwent treatment.

During the preliminary investigation, police learned that the accused, Vikas and Lalu Pal, had gone to the victims’ house and carried out the attack. Vikas’s mobile location was found to be near the crime scene at the time of the incident.

“Police arrested the accused, and during interrogation, Vikas revealed that he had been hired by Chotte Lal’s nephew, Sone Lal, who lives in Dubai,” said government counsel Dinesh Yadav. “Sone Lal wanted to grab Chotte Lal’s ancestral property and had promised to pay Vikas Rs 2 lakh for carrying out the murder,” he added.

Yadav added that police also found evidence of money transferred by Sone Lal to Vikas’s bank account. “Sone Lal, who is still in Dubai, has been named as an accused in the case for criminal conspiracy,” said Rajesh Gautam.
