‘Hamirpur youth mastermind of crime’: SIT files chargesheet in Atiq, Ashraf murder case

The Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the double murder of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his younger brother Khalid Azim, alias Ashraf, on Thursday filed its chargesheet against the three assailants arrested from the crime scene in Prayagraj on April 15.
Quoting the chargesheet that was filed within 90 days of the killings, an SIT official said that Shani Singh, alias Puraney (23), a resident of Hamirpur, was the mastermind of the murders as he instigated the other two accused —Luvlesh Tiwari (22) and Arun Kumar Maurya (18) — to commit the crime. Luvlesh and Arun are from Banda and Kasganj, respectively.
The chargesheet has been filed under IPC Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) among others. The SIT said the assailants did not have any personal enmity with either Atiq or Ashraf and that they wanted to become popular by finishing the duo’s “gang”.
