Govt keen to revive co-op banks whose licenses RBI has cancelled: Shivpal

Cooperative Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav told the Assembly today that the government was in touch with the Reserve Bank of India and NABARD to ensure the functioning of 25 cooperative banks whose banking licenses had been cancelled by the RBI.

The minister,presenting demands for grants of Rs 691.87 crore for the Cooperative Department,said farmers would suffer if 25 cooperative banks were closed. Therefore,the government would provide financial help to run these banks. Shivpal said the cooperative movement had received a setback during the previous BSP regime because some persons who were not members of any cooperative body were elected directors and chairmen. If democratically elected people run the cooperative bodies,there is little chance of corruption,he said. The minister said he had already ordered a probe into financial irregularities,if any,in the cooperative banks during the BSP regime.

He said the government would withdraw cases against those farmers who had clashed with officials to get fertilizers during the previous BSP regime. DAP fertilizer was not available during the BSP regime. There was high demand for urea. Farmers were caned by police for demanding fertilizer and booked in cases. The government will withdraw cases against such farmers, he said. He assured the house that there would be no shortage of fertiliser this time. He said his priority was holding elections in the cooperative bodies on time.

Shivpal suspends 13 RNN officials

LUCKNOW: PWD minister Shivpal Yadav suspended four general managers,three project managers,two project engineers,three assistant account officers and an accountant of the UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam for alleged financial irregularities and laxity in work. An official press release stated that the suspension orders were issued after senior officials conducted an inquiry into their projects. The report recommended their suspension. The suspended officials include general managers S Kumar,A K Gautam,Avni Kumar and Rajveer Singh; project managers Rajeev Sharma,V K Singh and Hiralal; two project engineers Rajeev Garg and P C Ram; three assistant account officers Ramnath,K S Kakkad and G P Choudhary and accountant U B Singh.
