Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday accepted the demand of doctors from Provincial Medical Services, who were seeking to go abroad for study tours on government expenditure.

“I believe the doctors should be given a chance to share their experiences and learn by travelling abroad for international conventions,” Akhilesh said at a convention organised by Provincial Medical Services’ Association (PMSA) in Lucknow.

PMSA president Dr Ashok Kumar Yadav said that till now, only those posted in medical colleges, were able to go on foreign tours. “Those posted in other places, such as district hospitals, could only manage to do so by jugaad. A proper framework was lacking. We are happy that the CM has given his consent,” he added. The state did not allow PMS doctors to attend such global meets till now.

Akhilesh also gave his consent for the association’s demand of a guest house-cum-convention centre in Lucknow’s Nishatganj.

“We have a cadre of 17,000 and there 13,500 members in our association. Every day, several doctors arrive in Lucknow for training, meetings, workshops, etc. So, we wanted to utilise the 3 to 4 acres of land we had in Nishatganj,” Ashok said.

The association also sought rural and vehicle allowances, time-bound redressal of complaints and fixed working hours. Akhilesh said the principal secretary will take a call in these.

Further, the doctors raised the issue of their security. State Health Minister Ahmed Hasan said: “The Uttar Pradesh Medical Protection Act has already been implemented. In Lucknow only, two CMOs were murdered… another was murdered inside a jail… we shouldn’t forget it. The previous government (BSP) was corrupt and their ministers are in jail. But in this government, no doctor or minister will go to jail.”

Akhilesh added: “A good doctor is one who prescribes less number of medicines and in a time-bound manner. But some jholachaap doctors prescribe all sorts of medicine in the hope that some or the other medicine will work.”
