Four children drown in Mathura

Four children drowned in the Yamuna in Naujheel area of Mathura district on Sunday.

The incident occurred when the children had gone to the river for a bath. The deceased have been identified as Javed (12),Nazir (10),Shahbaj (9) and Aqil (10). Another child,Arbaj (11),who was accompanying the four,survived as he had not gone into deep water.

“The deceased had entered deep into the river. The survivor informed the locals who called the police,” said Station Officer of Naujheel police station Kailash Chandra Sharma.

The families of the victims are engaged in the fishing business.  

Sharma claimed the children had died when their bodies were recovered.

But after the locals mounted pressure,the police took them to the nearest Primary Health Centre where the doctors declared them dead on arrival.

Villagers alleged that children were alive when they were taken out of the river and they could have survived if they had received timely treatment.

Alleging laxity on the part of the doctors and police,villagers blocked the road at Bajna trisection.

Sharma said: “Villagers were pacified and traffic was restored.”
