For BJP, former top cop digs up ‘dirt’ on ruling Yadav family

Brij Lal says ‘law of Saifai’ reigns supreme in Samajwadi Party govt.

BEST known for the operations he led against dacoits and criminal elements, former UP DGP Brij Lal is now leading a fight against the ruling Yadav family in state. Brij Lal, who joined BJP in January this year, claims that under Samajwadi Party, the “law of Saifai” reigns supreme in UP.

Saifai, in Etawah district, is the native village of SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. Brij Lal, who had also served as SSP in Etawah, has now been given the task of exposing the “criminal antecedents” of the Yadav family.

The former DGP has already attended two BJP public meetings where he recalled how as Etawah SSP he had registered a criminal case against Mulayam’s younger brother Shivpal, who is now a senior cabinet minister in the Akhilesh Yadav government. He also talked about how various dacoit gangs used to take shelter in vicinity of Etawah.

He raised the issues during BJP rallies in Kannauj held after a Dalit-Muslim clash, and in Barabanki after the alleged rape and murder of Dalit girl. Senior BJP leader Dushyant Gautam, who is also the national president of party’s SC/ST cell, attended the Barabanki meeting.

“It is true that I have raised some issues related to the Yadav family during the meetings. I was posted as SSP in Etawah in1990 when I had got a case registered against Shivpal,” Brij Lal told The Indian Express. The case was related to land grabbing, assault on a police officer inside police station and forcibly releasing 25 accused from police custody, he said.

“Shivpal’s supporters had captured the land of a poor farmer who too belonged to Yadav community. On my orders, then station officer Shah Alam Khan arrested 22 people from the spot and brought them to the police station. Darshan Yadav, the then pradhan of Saifai, who was recently awarded UP’s highest civilian honour Yash Bharti, reached the police station along with two others and slapped the SO. All three were arrested taking the total to 25,” Brij Lal recalled.
He claimed that Mulayam’s another brother, Ram Gopal Yadav, had earlier called him asking him not to interfere in the matter.

“Soon, Shivpal reached the police station and misbehaved with the SO. The matter escalated and then DIG, Kanpur range, J S Ghungesh, too reached the spot. Shivapl’s supporters gave eight applications against the SO…all of arrested people were released. But, I also got a case registered against Shivpal and his supporters,” Brij Lal said.

“Mulayam, who was then the chief minister, ordered a CB-CID inquiry into the case against Shivpal and others. In a record time of 20 days, Shivpal was given a clean chit while the SO was prosecuted. Even orders for my sacking were passed,” the retired IPS officer from the 1977-batch claimed.

He said Kalyan Singh, who took charge as chief minister in 1991, got both him and the SO reinstated.

Without taking any names, the former IPS officer claimed that gangs of dacoits used to get shelter in Etawah region. “Several dacoits like Chhaviram Yadav, Mahaveera, Nirbhay Gurjar received shelter and every one knows from where. I need not name them. There is a law of Saifai. The officers following it are rewarded or else face the music,” he claimed.

Brij Lal claims that Mulayam got him transferred to far flung areas. “There was threat to my life too and I used to sleep with an AK-47 by my side,” he added.
Known to have shared a good relation with BSP chief Mayawati, Brij Lal was rewarded with plum postings, including that of the DGP, during her tenure. He, however, claims that after Akhilesh took charge in 2012, the state government did not release him for central deputation posting as DG, CRPF. “They were apprehensive that I may cause damage during polls,” he said.

Brij Lal also did not rule out contesting the next year’s Assembly elections as BJP candidate. “I will contest if my party wants me to,” he said.

Contacted, Samajwadi Party state spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary refused to comment on the issue saying that he has no knowledge about details given by Brij Lal.
