Police in Agra on Tuesday lodged an FIR against Independent candidate Rameshwar Chaudhary, who contested the Lok Sabha seat from Fatehpur Sikri, for allegedly breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
The case was registered following an inquiry over a purported viral video, where Chaudhary is allegedly seen pressing a button on the EVM, while casting his vote, with allegations that he shared the video on social media platforms.
According to the police, on Tuesday they received an information about a purported video, widely circulated on social media, showing a person casting his vote by pressing the button on the EVM. During the preliminary inquiry, the police traced the video and concluded that the accused had breached the confidentiality of the voting process, a violation of the Representation of the People Act.
Sub-Inspector Krishna Gopal at Achhnera police station filed the complaint against Chaudhary, under the Representation of People Act. Sonam Kumar, DCP, Agra, said that the case was registered as the video went viral on social media and the investigation will also include determining the location where the video was recorded.
Chaudhary is the son of BJP MLA Babulal Chaudhary, a three-time winner in the assembly elections from Fatehpur Sikri. Following the BJP’s decision to nominate the incumbent MP, Rajkumar Chahar, for the Fatehpur Sikri Lok Sabha seat, MLA Babulal Chaudhary, reportedly objected and nominated his son, Rameshwar Chaudhary, as an Independent candidate for the same seat.
