Demanding the arrest of assailants who had shot at PWD executive engineer J K Singh in Varanasi, engineers across the state began an indefinite boycott of work from Friday.
They warned that they would not return to work until the assailants were arrested and security provided to others engineers engaged in field work.
Uttar Pradesh Engineers Association president A A Farooqui said that engineers of various departments will hold a one-day token strike on Monday. They will organise meetings and submit memorandums to the district magistrate demanding security for engineers. They will also write to Chief Minister Mayawati with similar demands.
Two unidentified assailants had shot at J K Singh on Thursday evening when he was returning home from office. Singh is in the ICU and we have not been able to speak to him. But probably, the matter is related to payment for construction work, said Farooqi.
We will try to meet PWD Minister Naseemudin Siddiqui on Saturday in this connection, he added.
