Depressed over death of his father, wife and son during past one year, a 48-year-old engineer with the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) in Varanasi district committed suicide after killing his 11-year-old daughter at his official residence under Manduadih police station area Thursday night. The incident came to light Friday morning.
The police have recovered a suicide note from the spot, in which he purportedly wrote that he was ending his life and that of his daughter and only he was to be blamed for it. The police said that the engineer was passing through a phase of depression following three deaths in his family since December 2014.
According to the police, senior section engineer Santosh Kumar Singh, a native of Ballia district, used to live in Jalalipatti Colony of DLW. His younger brother Kamlesh Singh and his wife also used to live with him. On Thursday night, after dinner, Santosh took his 11-year-old daughter, Sakshi alias Vaishnavi, to bed.
Next Kamlesh spotted Santosh’ body hanging with a nylon cord from the mango tree in the courtyard. He then informed the police. In Santosh’ room, they found Sakshi dead. She had been strangulated.
“A suicide note has been recovered, which said that he was a broken man and that he was ending his daughter’s life,” said CO (Bhelupur), Alok Jaiswal. Investigations revealed that Santosh had three children – sons Abhishek and Vivek, and Sakshi. “Vivek died due to some illness in December, 2014.
Then the engineer’s father, Govardhan Singh, succumbed to illness in February. In April, his wife, Kumud, passed away due to cancer. This had left Singh completely broken and depressed,” said SO (Manduadih), Farid Ahmed.
