Five candidates appearing for the Uttar Pradesh Combined Pre-medical Test (CPMT) were detained on Thursday on suspicion of impersonation in Lucknow.
Only one case, however, could be confirmed. Amit Kumar Ponia of Bihar was found appearing for Vijay Kumar of Jaunpur at a Lucknow centre.
CPMT-2009 examination was held at 139 centres across the state on Thursday. Since there were reports of larges-cale impersonation,Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaja Medical University which is conducting the examination was extra vigilant.
During interrogation,Amit told the police that he had came in contact with a middleman named Deepu in Bihar. Deepu had offered him Rs 1.5 lakh, which he would have received after Vijay cleared the examination. Amit is a native from Motihari and runs a coaching centre in Patna. He had come to Uttar Pradesh two days ago and collected the admit card from Vijay, who lives in Jaunpur.
According to sources,at the centre on Thursday, the officials noticed that Vijays photograph did not match the candidate who was appearing for the examination. They asked Amit a few personal questions, which he failed to answer. Following this,he was handed over to the police.
The police, however, have not been able to find any evidence against the other four who have been detained. We are waiting for a formal complaint from the university, said ASP Shalabh Mathur. There were also reports of an impostor being caught in Jhansi, but the university could not confirm these.
Dr Saroj Chooramani Gopal,Vice-Chancellor of CSMMU,said: We were suspicious of these candidates. Because of our vigilance, around 50 per cent of such candidates did not turn up.
She added that each student has been photographed in the examination hall. These will now be sent to the colleges where selected candidates will take admission.
The students, however, did not mind the inconvenience caused by extra vigilance. Such vigilance is good for sincere students who study hard for the test, said Manish Yadav, who appeared for the examination at the UPSC hall. He added that the students were asked to reach the centre an hour before the examination and wait for half-an-hour after it was over.
