Dismissed police inspector Sanjay Rai,who is an accused in the murder case of a 12-year-old boy,Maaz Ahmed, surrendered before the court of Lucknow chief judicial magistrate on Monday. Rai was absconding for more than a month when he was suspended, dismissed and a reward of Rs 5,000 was announced on him.

Assistant Prosecution Officer Ratan Kumar Srivastava said Rai surrendered in the court of CJM Pramod Kumar in connection with the two cases — one of conspiring for murder lodged at Indira Nagar police station and the other of criminal breach of trust by public servant for possessing the police department’s revolver lodged at Mahanagar police station. Srivastava said the court sent Rai to judicial custody for 14 days.

Heavy police force was deployed at the court premises after a huge crowd gathered there and police apprehended that he could be manhandled by the mob. In a statement, police said Rai had come to court premises posing as a lawyer,to escape arrest.

Maaz was shot at his house in Indira Nagar on the night of May 29 by unidentified persons. On June 8,police arrested Rai’s help Rambabu alias Chhotu, and Ajit Yadav and Rahul Rai,both residents of Azamgarh. Police claimed Maaz’s killing was conspired by Rai,who had an affair with the boy’s cousin. According to police,Rai was unhappy with her proximity to a taxi driver,so he planned to kill someone from her family in order to implicate the taxi driver for the murder.

Police said Rai had asked Ajit,Rahul and another hired shooter Bunty to kill anyone from the girl’s family who opens the door . On the fateful night of May 29,the door of the house was opened by Maaz.

Rai,who was then posted as in-charge of Lucknow police’s anti-human trafficking cell, was suspended. Police also announced a reward of Rs 5,000 on him while he was absconding. He was dismissed from service last week.
