Congress reviews list of PCC delegates

Two days after the release of the list of 872 state Congress Committee delegates by UP Congress Election Authority,a large number of complaints has forced the Central Election Authority to review it.

The review exercise was conducted in Delhi on Monday by Oscar Fernandes, the in-charge of party elections,in presence of AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh and state Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi. Sources said the review found that the errors in the list happened at the data-entry stage at the party office in Delhi.

The party has now decided to come out with the revised list on Tuesday evening.

The complaints were also raised against the list as women members were not given 33 per cent representation in election of PCC delegates from blocks and clusters of wards to the state committee.

Even OBC and SC/ST wing of the state committee were also unhappy with the “inadequate” representation.

Despite Joshi’s promise of giving good representation to women,in Lucknow, only 3 out of 17 delegates were women. This included Joshi. In Sultanpur, from where Rahul Gandhi has been elected as a delegate, only 2 out of 25 delegates are women and in Rae Bareli, only 4 out of 22 delegates are women including Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Sources said the discrepancy occurred despite clear instructions to state election authority by high command to ensure adequate representation to women,SC/ST and other backward classes during the election process.

When asked,J D Seelam, additional state election officer, said,“It is true that we have received a large number of complaints. While reviewing these complaints today,we realised that the list got jumbled up during data-entry.”

He added,“A major complaint is about those members who joined the party in last three years and have been made delegates. There will be a meeting and we shall be able to come out with the correct list on Tuesday evening.”

He said the election authority had tried best to include as many women as possible and shortfall,if any, would be compensated by nomination.
