Congress, BSP MLAs walk out over farmers’ plight

“The question hour should be suspended and their issues should be taken up first,” Leader of Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya said.

The BSP and Congress legislators staged a walk out from the state assembly on Tuesday after their demand for discussion on loss incurred by farmers was turned down by Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey.

As the House proceeding began, members of the BSP, Congress and RLD trooped in the well demanding suspension of the question hour to hold a discussion on the loss suffered by farmers across the state due to inclement weather conditions for the past two days. Leader of Opposition Swami Prasad Maurya said farmers have suffered heavy losses as their crops have been destroyed due to heavy hailstorm.

“The question hour should be suspended and their issues should be taken up first,” Maurya said.

Even though the legislators returned to their seats, they continued to demand a discussion on the issue with BJP leader Suresh Khanna also joining the opposition. Maurya claimed that the state government is hiding details while the farmers are living in distress.

In his reply, Parliamentary Affairs minister Azam Khan said it is a serious issue and since it is a natural calamity, the state government is making all possible efforts to provide relief to the farmers.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Khan said, “Jaisa raja waisi praja”, a comment that further annoyed the opposition members.

Azam also said that the Opposition members do not have any sympathy for the farmers but only wanted to create news. “We are not able to understand if their opposition is with the government or ooparrwala (God). We don’t know why they are so angry,” he said.

Unsatisfied with Azam’s reply, BSP members staged a walk out from the Assembly, raising slogans against the government, followed by Congress members.
