Supporters of the BJP and Congress clashed in Kanpur on Sunday as the BJP workers were on their way to stage a demonstration outside Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswals residence on the issue of coal block allocation.
BJP leaders claimed that over a dozen of their party workers were injured by Congress workers who pelted stones at them. Police,however,denied reports of injury. Kanpur DIG Amitabh Yash said: Nobody was injured in the incident. Police used only mild lathicharge to control the situation. Police said they have not received any complaint from the BJP.
Jaiswal was in Kanpur today but he had left his house when the incident took place.
The BJP had announced to stage a protest at Jaiswals residence in Pokharpur locality of the city. After BJP national vice-president Kalraj Mishra flagged off the procession of party workers,they were stopped by the police nearly 250 metres from Jaiswals residence.
BJP district coordinator Surendra Maithani said around 200 Congress workers,assembled at Jaiswals residence,started pelting stones at them. When we tried to scale the police barricade,police restored to lathicharge, Maithani said.
Maithni claimed that among those injured were BJP Yuva Morcha district president Pramod Vishwakarma and general secretary Pramod Pandey. I have submitted a complaint with Chakeri police station asking them to register FIR against a dozen Congress workers,Circle Officer J N Singh and Chakeri Station Officer D K Shahi who attacked the BJP workers, Maithni said.
City Congress Committee president Mahesh Dixit rejected the BJPs allegations,saying: Congress workers had assembled there to meet the minister. BJP workers had come with stones and canes to attack Congress workers. They damaged vehicles of Congress workers, Dixit said.
