The Uttar Pradesh DGP has asked the Azamgarh police and the Anti-Terror Squad to verify if Saif-ur-Rehman Ansari, the youth arrested from Azamgarh on charges of involvement in serial blasts in Ahmedbad,Jaipur and UP,was a case of mistaken identity,as alleged by his family.
According to the Jaipur police,Ansari is an Indian Mujahideen operative. He was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terror Squad from the Mumbai-bound Godan Express in Bhopal on April 12 and handed over to the Rajasthan police.
Saifs family claims that he is innocent. His father,Abdul Rehman, has submitted an application to the Rajasthan DGPs office saying that the name and address of the wanted man mentioned in the police records does not really match those of his son.
The wanted man is Saif-ur-Rehman Alvi of 18,Badarka,City Kotwali,Azamgarh district. Abdul Rehmans application mentioned that his sons name is Saif-ur-Rehman Ansari while their address is 246,Badarka locality,City Kotwali area in Azamgarh.
Saifs brother Jia-ur-Rehman Ansari, who is pursuing the case, told
The Indian Express on Saturday,We have been collecting facts to show that the police have mistakenly identified my brother as a terror accused. We will produce the evidence in court when the Rajasthan ATS files the chargesheet against Saif.
He added,Our lawyer in Jaipur has been consolidating the evidence to prove that it is a case of mistaken identity. Saif was present in Azamgarh at the time the blasts in which he has been made accused took place.
Jia-ur-Rehman said that earlier too,the UP ATS had caught two youths from Azamgarh who shared the name Saif-ur-Rehman. Both of these turned out to be cases of mistaken identity.
Rajasthan ATS ADG Kapil Garg, however, dismissed the familys claim, saying,The MP ATS team had arrested Saif-ur-Rehman and produced him before a Bhopal court where he confessed his involvement in the blasts before the judge.
In view of the Rajasthan polices stand, the family has no option but to wait until the charge-sheet against Saif is submitted in court.
