The CBI is likely to lodge a case of destruction of evidence against VK Gupta,Additional Director General of UP Prisons Administration and Reform, for allegedly destroying a suicide note, purportedly left behind by former deputy CMO Dr YS Sachan, who was found dead in mysterious circumstances in Lucknow jail in June last year.
Gupta had allegedly took away the note when he visited the jail after Sachans death. CBIs search of Guptas office on Friday yielded no result.
At the time of his death,Sachan was admitted in the jail hospital. The suicide note was found in a bag from his bed soon after his body was found in a first floor toilet.
On Thursday, the CBI had filed an application in Lucknow court, seeking permission to search the ADGs office. The CBI said it had got a photocopy of the suicide note, but they suspect that the original note was lying with the ADG at his office and they needed it for investigation.
Soon after getting the court order, the CBI team went to the office of Prisons Department in Gomti Nagar and searched the ADGs office.
VK Gupta said he had already provided to CBI several documents related to the Sachan case whenever they had asked. He had also provided CCTV footage of about 1,000 hours of the period when Sachan was lodged in the jail.
CBI sources said that they had questioned the ADG,but he kept denying that he had the original note. However, jail staff had told CBI that a note was found and handed over to the ADG when he visited the jail after Sachans death.
The CBI is likely to register a case of destruction of evidence against the ADG,sources confirmed.
The agency is investigating the case on the orders of the Allahabad High Court.
