Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district have found that Rs 41 lakh seized during investigations is missing from the malkhana of the Govindnagar police station. The malkhana is a designated room where case-related seized articles are stored.
The matter came to light when the newly appointed malkhana in-charge, also known as the head moharir, reviewed records before taking over from his predecessor, who was transferred to Lucknow last year.
An FIR has been registered at the police station against former malkhana in-charge Dinesh Chand Tiwari on charges of criminal breach of trust, according to Mahesh Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police, Kanpur. The missing Rs 41 lakh is linked to 21 cases registered at the station between 2021 and 2022.
Tiwari, who served at the Govindnagar police station from 2020 to 2022, is currently posted in Lucknow. After his transfer last year, he was repeatedly asked to return and hand over charge to the newly appointed head moharir. Two days ago, when he came to Kanpur for the handover, a record check revealed that Rs 41 lakh was missing from the malkhana. When he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, the police booked him in the case.
Records show that the missing Rs 41 lakh was recovered during a raid on a gambling den. Since the case is still pending in court, the amount was kept in the malkhana as case property. If Tiwari fails to provide a satisfactory explanation, steps will be taken to recover the money from him, ASP Kumar said.
