A BTech student of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) committed suicide by hanging himself in the institute’s hostel on Wednesday morning.

A resident of Krishna Nagar in Kapilvastu,Ashish Gupta was the son of a leading trader in Nepal. His body has been sent for postmortem.

Gupta was reportedly depressed as he had fared poorly in the second semester exams which ended on Monday. Chief Warden Professor Vinod Yadav said: “Last night,he spoke to his parents and told them about his performance.”

“In the first semester too,he could not qualify in four out of five papers,” he added.

On Wednesday morning, his parents called up the hostel’s security officer and requested him to find Gupta as they couldn’t get through him on his cellphone. Around 5 am,the security personnel tried to wake up Gupta.

When he did not respond, the institute authorities informed the Shivkuti police. The officers broke into his room only to find him dead.

In the last two years, this is the fourth suicide by an MNNIT student.
