BSP leader close to don Brijesh Singh shot dead

Ram Bihari Chaubey had lost 2012 Assembly elections to Brijesh’s nephew; was preparing to contest 2017 polls.

Unidentified assailants shot dead BSP leader Ram Bihari Chaubey, considered close to jailed mafia don Brijesh Singh, at his house in Varanasi district Friday. The motive behind the murder is not yet clear, the police said.

Chaubey, who had lost 2012 Assembly polls as BSP candidate from Sakaldiha constituency against Brijesh’s nephew, was preparing to contest the upcoming Assembly polls in 2017.

According to the police, Chaubey, in his early 50s, was at his house in Srikanthpur village under Chaubepur police station area, when two youngsters reached there apparently to meet him.

“Chaubey was in the lawn of his house. The youth approached Chaubey, who ordered for tea, and the trio walked towards the cow-shed. As they reached there, Chaubey was shot from close range. He sustained two gunshots in the upper portion of his body. He was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The assailants, meanwhile, fled on a motorcycle,” said SP (Rural), S K Singh.
While Chaubey’s elder son was out of city, his younger son, some other family members and servants were present inside the house at the time of the incident, the SP said. “The assailants had reportedly covered their faces with mufflers,” he added.

Asked about the number of assailants, Singh said that the number could be two or four, as varying descriptions was being given by the family members. It is possible that, while two of them entered the house, the other two waited outside.

Chaubey, who is believed to be looking after much of jailed don Brijesh’s work, had contested on BSP ticket from Sakaldiha Assembly seat of Chandauli district in the 2012 Assembly polls. Brijesh’s nephew Sushil Singh, who had contested as an independent candidate, had won from the seat.

It was alleged that Annapurna Singh, wife of Brijesh, was instrumental in getting Chaubey the BSP ticket, at the expense of Sushil. This had led to animosity between the members of the family. A family house was also said to be a bone of contention between Sushil and Brijesh, with Chaubey having reportedly played a role in getting the former to vacate the same.
