BSP in bind over bride abduction bid

The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party is on the backfoot in Saharanpur district over involvement of the son and other close family members of party MLC Meghraj Jaraware in an attempt to abduct a girl from the marriage mandap in Deoband on July 9.

The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party is on the backfoot in Saharanpur district over involvement of the son and other close family members of party MLC Meghraj Jaraware in an attempt to abduct a girl from the marriage mandap in Deoband on July 9.

The Opposition has given a call for “Bahu Beti Bachao Panchayat” at Sarsawan on July 19 and threatened to intensify its agitation on July 24 if no action is taken against the MLC.

The MLC’s son Amit, nephews Sonu and Sanni, and three were arrested in Deoband on July 9 when they attempted to abduct Aruna Sharma from the marriage mandap. Amit has claimed Aruna was in love with his cousin Sanni.

The Opposition in the district has also formed an all-party ‘Sangharsh Samiti’ to steer the campaign. It is alleged the BSP MLC threatened the girl’s father Ashok Sharma and also offered him Rs 5 lakh to arrange for Aruna’s marriage with Sanni.

The Opposition has alleged the administration, under pressure from BSP leaders, including Basic Education Minister Dharm Singh Saini,is protecting the BSP MLC. They have demanded the MLC,his son and the others be booked under the Gangster Act.

BSP leaders dismiss the Opposition campaign as a political stunt ahead of the elections to the urban local bodies and state Assembly due in early 2012.
