A police constable and his associate were arrested in Lucknow for duping two candidates,who had applied for recruitment in the Uttar Pradesh Police force. Constable Jai Ram Yadav was posted with the 32nd Battalion of PAC in Lucknow. Yadav and his associate Manish Devi had allegedly taken Rs 5,000 each from the two candidates after promising them that they would be selected for the police force. “The constable had asked them to pay Rs 1 lakh after they got selected,” said a police officer.

Three IPS officers promoted
The state government promoted three IPS officers of the 1975 batch to the rank of DGP on Tuesday. They are Babu Lal Yadav,Additional Director General of Police at Dr B R Ambedkar Police Academy in Moradabad,V C Goel,Chairman of UP Police Recruitment and Promotion Board and D K Sharma,Chairman and Managing Director of the Police Housing Corporation Ltd. With these promotions,the number of DG-rank officers has gone up to 9 in the state.

Man held for robbing passengers in train
The Government Railway Police on Tuesday arrested a man from Haryana,who used to rob train passengers after drugging them. Kuldeep Kumar (45)of Jind was arrested from the Charbagh railway station in Lucknow. Additional Director General (Railway) A K Jain said Kumar had confessed to his involvement in around 20 cases. The police have recovered two laptops,seven mobile phones,a pen drive,a gold chain,two rings,13 ATM/credit cards,14 SIM cards,a fake driving licence and two railway tickets and 55 gm of some narcotic substance from the accused.

SC/ST Commission chairman resigns
The state government accepted the resignation of BSP coordinator Srinath from the post of chairman of the SC/ST Commission on Tuesday. Srinath was appointed as the chairman of the Commission about 9 months ago. According to sources,on Monday,Srinath was asked to submit his resignation following a complaint of him being involved in extra-marital relations. He handles the party’s affairs in Gorakhpur.

BJP legislator’s house torched
Bahraich: The brother of a BJP legislator sustained injuries on Tuesday after unidentified persons allegedly torched a part of his house in Kotwali area.

“Some unidentified persons threw inflammable substance on my house in the early hours of the day and torched a room in which my brother,Dineshwar Singh,was sleeping,” BJP legislator from Mehsi Sureshwar Singh said.

He claimed that Dineshwar sustained serious burn injuries and has been admitted to hospital. “The matter is being investigated and a team from the Lucknow forensic science laboratory has been called to inspect the spot,” Superintendent of Police Lalji Shukla said after inspecting the MLA’s house. The MLA alleged that this was the second attempt to torch his house.

“On February 6,some persons set ablaze a part of my house. Besides I have received several letters threatening to kill my family members,” he claimed. Singh alleged that despite informing the chief minister,chief secretary,DGP and other senior government officials,no step was taken.

Three arrested with heroin worth crores
Meerut: Three persons were arrested and 3 kg heroin worth Rs 12 crore was recovered from them,in Meerut on Tuesday. The trio —Ashwini from Muzaffarnagar,Rajender from Etah and Suresh from Agra — were arrested from the Bhaisali bus stand area,said Superintendent of Police Prabal Pratap Singh. The heroin was bought from Nepal,he added.
