LUCKNOW: The Election Commission of India has announced by-election to the UP Legislative Council to fill the vacancy created due to resignation of former chief minister Mayawati after her election to the Rajya Sabha. Notification for the by-election will be issued on July 3,nominations can be filed till July 10,scrutiny will take place on July 11,withdrawals of candidature will be allowed till July 13 and polling will be held on July 20. Mayawatis term in the Legislative Council was to expire in July,2016,but she resigned after her partys defeat in the Assembly elections. Also,the ECI has revised the schedule for the by-election to the Legislative Council from Bahraich Local Authorities Constituency in view of the ongoing local body elections there. The vacancy had occurred due to the resignation of sitting member Madhuri Verma after her election to the Assembly from Nanpara as a Congress candidate. The notification will be issued on July 3,nominations will be allowed until July 10,scrutiny will take place on July 11,withdrawals will be allowed till July 13,and the polling will be held on July 27.
Brijbhushan Tiwaris son files RS papers
LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party candidate Alok Tiwari,the son of former Rajya Sabha MP Brijbhushan Tiwari,filed his nomination paper for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat on Thursday. Brijbhushan Tiwari died a day after taking oath as Rajya Sabha MP on April 25,2012,necessitating the bypoll. The election is scheduled for June 25.
Fire in Bahraich
kills four children
LUCKNOW: Four children were burnt alive when a fire broke out in a village of Khairighat in Bahraich district on Thursday noon. Over two dozen hutments were reduced to ashes by the time fire tenders reached the village. Bahraich SP G P Kanaujia said the fire broke out in one Rajaram Yadavs hut in Bhikharipur village while his wife was cooking.
IVRS facility at new airport terminal
Lucknow: Airport Authority of India has started interactive voice response system (IVRS) facility at Chaudhary Charan Singh (Amausi) Airport in Lucknow to give information related to arrival and departure of flights at its new terminal building. The facility has been provided on telephone no. 91522-2434914. Airport officials said the information based on data fed by airlines will be available on this number.
