A three-year-old boy,Sameer,fell into a drain and drowned in the accumulated water on Sunday afternoon in Ghaziabad. The police said Sameer was playing outside his house in Eidgah Basti in Muradnagar,when one of his socks fell inside the drain. In an effort to retrieve it,Sameer too fell inside around 12 noon. The boy was rescued by a passerby and taken to a nearby hospital,where he was declared dead on arrival.
Police officials said the boy died as the drain was not cleaned regularly and water had accumulated in it.
Protesting the negligence on part of the civic agencies,angry residents of Muradnagar also blocked National Highway-58.
Sameers family has been promised a compensation of Rs 10,000,sources said. The protesters were also told that the drain will be cleaned regularly and a wall will be built around it to prevent more accidents,sources said.
