A woman, who had sustained burn injuries and was wrapped only in a blanket, collapsed and died at a petrol pump in Ram Bagh area of the city today.
Around the same time, the body of a young man, with injuries on his face, was found in an empty compound of an inter-college across the road.
Police have ruled out any connection between the two incidents so far. They are trying to identify both the deceased.
The incident came to light when a tea-stall owner,Kallu, was setting up his vend adjacent to Ram Bagh Automobiles on Lowther Road around 7.30 am. Kallu spotted the woman, wrapped in a blanket, walking towards the petrol pump in a daze. She fell once, tried to get up and finally collapsed near one of the diesel tanks. Meanwhile, some passersby noticed the body of a young man lying in the empty compound of Sewa Samiti Vidya Mandir Inter-College,right across the road. The police were informed.
The man who was on night duty had left. He may or may not have seen anything. We came late and it was all waterlogged because of heavy rain since early morning, said Kripa Shankar Shukla, one of the employees at the petrol pump.
Preliminary probe indicated the woman, aged around 25,could be pregnant. She had sustained more than 90 per cent burns. It appeared that acid may have been poured on her. The police said only a post-mortem would be able to establish the duration of her pregnancy and nature of burn injuries.
The body of the man,in his early 30s,bore the tattoos Sanjay on his right arm,and SR on the left.
